Bishop Edward W. Hoffman
United Holy Church of America, Inc.(UHCA)
Bishop Edward W. Hoffman, born in Liberia, West Africa, attended the Salala Mission, a boarding school established by the United Holy Church of America, Inc. Under the tutelage of the late Mother Pearl L. Teasley and the late Reverend Edith E. Johnson, missionaries sent from The United Holy Church of America Inc., the now Bishop Edward W. Hoffman accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and began his walk with GOD. The late Reverend Dr. Edith E. Johnson recognized -something about young Edward and affirmed GOD’s hands on his life. She entrusted him with all the administrative affairs of the mission, and during her absences, she would leave him in charge.
While he served as the dean of students, he was also responsible for all construction work and the construction workers. His zeal for GOD inspired him to spearhead and build an edifice of worship on the Salala Mission, which still exists today. After the dedication of the edifice, the late Bishop Joseph T. Bowens, the late Bishop W. Nathaniel Stroubhar, and the late Reverend Dr. Edith E. Johnson of UHCA collectively brought young Edward to America. He relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, and became an active member at Bethel Pentecostal Church under the tutelage of the late Dr. Henry D. Bell. While at Bethel Pentecostal Church, God strategically placed Edward’s help mate in the person of Betty J. (Cater) Hoffman. As he continued to grow and mature in the LORD, Edward sensed God's calling on his life.
He worked diligently as a layman in different offices and capacities in his local assembly, Bethel Pentecostal Church. As time progressed, the weight of God's calling grew heavier on him, and he accepted his calling. In 1979, he was ordained an Elder by Bishop James A. Forbes, Bishop John W. Lewis, and Bishop Lewis P. Miller of UHCA. Shortly after that, Elder Edward Became the Vice President under Bishop John W. Lewis, who served as the president of the northern district, UHCA. After retiring from his circular law enforcement job, he chose to walk in his calling. He founded Calvary Church International in 1982 and started the Church in his home. As membership grew, he had to move the church out of his house and start renting a church building.
In 1994, by faith, Elder Edward purchased and reconstructed an edifice of worship for all people. In 1996, GOD honored an elevated Elder, Edward W. Hoffman, to the office of Bishop, and he was consecrated by Bishop H. W. Fields, UHCA, Goldsborough, North Carolina. In the history of the United Holy Church of America Inc., Bishop Edward W. Hoffman is the only native African to erect a church edifice. He is a product of the United Holy Church of America's love labor, a witness of their stewardship, and a testimony to God's glory.
